1950s Kitchen Transformed
This family was ready for a total transformation of the tired and dated basement and basement kitchen in their Edgewood, Washington, home. From its Formica countertops to its 1950s cabinets and florescent lighting, this kitchen was ready to retire after more than a half-century of faithful service. The family will create a lot of happy memories in their upgraded basement – enjoying quiet time and fun gatherings with family and friends. The new kitchen will make it a pleasure to cook, dine, and clean up – whether it’s snacks for a a weekend game or a full family meal. In the future, the basement may become a “mother-in-law” suite.
- Replaced all the kitchen cabinets and hardware
- Removed the soffit above the cabinets and mounted the cabinets higher up to create more task space
- Added a glass-top stove and hood
- Replaced dated Formica counters and backsplash with beautiful granite counters and a coordinating tile backsplash
- Replaced a small sink and faucet with a large farmhouse sink and arched faucet/sprayer
- Added a stainless-steel dishwasher and a cabinet-mounted microwave
- Removed a window to extend the countertop, added extra upper and lower cabinets, and moved the refrigerator to a more convenient location
- Brought the plumbing and electrical up to code and added new electrical outlets to make it easy to use appliances where ever they are needed
- Replaced wood laminate flooring with durable, vinyl plank flooring
- Extended the vinyl flooring to give the kitchen a larger footprint for the dining table
- Replaced the carpet throughout the basement and stairs
- Moved the overhead lighting above the sink – where it’s needed most
- Replaced undermount florescent light fixtures with warm, energy-efficient undermount LED rope lighting
- A fresh coat of paint throughout the downstairs
